Growing Long Healthy Hair

Growing Long Healthy Hair

growing long hairGrowing long healthy hair is a lot harder than it may sound! As one of this season’s biggest trends this year is long hair, we thought we’d go over some key factors in keeping or growing your hair long. We’ll also mention a couple of important tips to avoid.

First and foremost – if you want long, gorgeous hair you need to trim it often! If you’re serious about having luxurious long locks – then coming into the salon every 4+ months isn’t going to cut it. We’d suggest once a month if possible. If that’s not doable, at least once every 6 weeks. It’s important to keep your ends trimmed as your hair will begin to split after a few weeks due to your daily hair routine. Keeping those split ends off means your hair will continually have new ends which equals growth.

Use a shampoo and conditioner that is specific to your hair needs. Not all shampoos and conditioners are made alike! It’s important that you discuss which brands and the specific types of product you’ll need with your stylist. Your hair may be overly dry or oily or it may need anti-frizz – the list goes on. Rather than decide on your own what to use, please consult with an expert!

Apply a mask treatment weekly. Some of our favorite masks are:

  • Redken Diamond Oil Deep Facets Hair Mask
  • Kerastase Masque Nutri-thermique Hair Mask
  • Kerastase Masque Force Architect Hair Mask

Masks are similar to shampoos and conditioners in that you should only apply masks that are suited for your hair type and condition. It’s important to again consult with your stylist to find the right mask that will deliver the best results.

Massage your scalp: this will stimulate blood flow to the area and promote growth. We recommend massaging your scalp quite often. Of course, don’t get too crazy and end up damaging your hair! If you can find a few minutes each day or every other day to gently massage your scalp, your hair will respond.

Avoid hot tools as much as possible and always use a heat protectant. Avoiding tools is certainly much easier said than done! It’s a little easier to get away with it during the Summer months, but for many of us, we use hot tools more often then we’d like. What’s important is to not overdo it. When using a tool to help style, try to get away with the bare minimum to achieve the look you want. Remember that you’re trying to create the perfect environment for your hair to grow and keeping anything that could be shocking to your hair to a minimum will have lasting results.

Eat a healthy diet and take vitamins including Vitamin A and C, Omega 3, Iron and Zinc. An apple a day will keep your split ends away! Keep eating those fruits and vegetables. Nutrients are so important for healthy hair. If your diet consists of Twinkies and Coke, chances are your hair will look like it! Stay away from junk food as much as possible. Not only will your hair thank you, but your body will as well.

Wash your hair less. Washing your hair often can strip your hair of its natural oils. Washing too much will harm more than help. If you can get away with washing every few days, that’s generally the best approach.

Avoid tight hairstyles that can pull on your roots. Braided hair is all the rage, but don’t overdo it. Having tight hairstyles on a consistent basis will speed up the appearance of split ends and will damage your hair at the root.

Be especially careful with hair when it’s wet. Use a wide tooth comb to brush through hair from ends to scalp. Take your time when brushing. If you try to untangle your hair by hard brushing, you’re damaging rather than strengthening. Having long hair means you’re in for a bit more maintenance time. Slow down…take your time and again your hair will respond by growing!

Be patient – growing long beautiful hair takes time! If you follow our advice and stick to it, you’ll notice results quicker than you might imagine. Best of luck!
